Abstract

The Integrating English programme aimed to improve the writing ability of Year 5 and 6 pupils through a structured CPD programme (based on the Australian LiLAC course) that provided teachers with linguistic and pedagogical strategies, with the greatest expected impact on EAL pupils. This was a two-arm, school-level clustered randomised controlled trial involving 91 schools, run between October 2016 and July 2018, with schools randomly allocated to receive Integrating English or to continue as a 'business as usual' control. Children in Integrating English schools made the equivalent of one month's less progress in KS2 writing on average compared to control schools, with similarly null or small negative effects on KS2 Reading and KS2 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling; none of these findings were statistically significant. The process evaluation found training was well received but only a minority of schools fully implemented the programme as intended.
